Special academic conditions: ISEP participants must have completed at least one year of higher education before arrival.

Academic notes: Students have a variety of courses to choose from: Södertörns högskola offers more than 50 courses taught in English. Each semester is divided into four periods of about one month each. Students usually schedule one course per period. Courses span one or two periods. There are also a few half-speed courses that span two periods; two of these can easily be taken simultaneously. Swedish courses are worth 5 or 10 points (equivalent to about 4 or 8 U.S. credits).

Södertörns högskola welcomes students at the sophomore level and upwards. However, sophomores should be aware that they have fewer courses to choose from since many courses are taught at an advanced level, including all business and natural science courses, and most sociology and political science courses. Course pre-requisites are usually one to two years of previous study in the particular field.

Language notes: Basic-level Swedish language courses are offered during both semesters. ISEP participants with Swedish language ability may apply to most university courses.

Program dates: Academic year: mid-August to June; Semester 1: mid-August to mid-January; Semester 2: mid-January to early June.

Room and board: ISEP participants are housed in single-occupancy rooms on the Flemingsberg Campus. All rooms have a bathroom and kitchenette. A stipend to cover the cost of meals is provided.

Profile: Founded in August 1996, Södertörns högskola is one Sweden's youngest university colleges. The university has grown rapidly; today there are 10,000 students enrolled. Södertörns högskola offers approximately 25 Study Programs, all of which maintain a strong link between academic teaching and research, as well as collaboration among different academic disciplines.

The many interdisciplinary programs make the university unique in Sweden. Many of the courses and educational programs are concerned with issues of ethnicity, migration, and nationalism in modern Europe. The aim is to prepare students for a future that will require flexible, imaginative people with university-level educations. Södertörns högskola has three campuses: the main campus is located in Flemingsberg; the other campuses are Campus Haninge and Campus Telge.

Locale: The area of Södertörn (a large peninsula covering the southern part of Stockholm county) offers a varied landscape with suburban centers as well as large forests and lakes and many opportunities for outdoor activities including bicycling, cross-country skiing, ice skating, and hiking. The university is very close to Stockholm - the Flemingsberg campus is only 20 minutes by train from central Stockholm - with its rich historical and cultural heritage, and shopping and entertainment facilities. Södertörns högskola is located in a growing metropolitan area south of Stockholm, distinguished by a population of many different cultures. One of the primary tasks for this newly founded university college is to increase student recruitment to higher education in this area.
